Nothing overly exciting has been going on. I haven't really been focused on my hair lately. It's rewarding me by sneaking in little growth spurts here and there. I'm about to officially be out of baby fro status! I can't wait to see what it's going to look like by the time my birthday rolls around (Jan. 4). Trust that I will be rockin my fro out in public somewhere. Chea! And my high school reunion is next June (yah I'm old)...lawd my hurr will be lookin maaaahvelous!
Here's a lil sumthin I did to the hair the other day. Nuthin special...just flat twists in the front and the fro in the back. 'Twas curte, but of course my homebody ass didn't go anywhere to show it off.
From the side:
As I sit here typing, I have a honey and olive oil treatment sittin in the tresses. Now that my scab hair is a thing of the past, I've been slacking on the deep conditioning treatments because my hair doesn't feel as dry as it used to. But I'm back on track and stuff.
My ex came over the other day. He hadn't seen me since before I did the chop so of course he had to touch the puff. He seemed surprised when he said, "It's soft." Pffttt. Why do people think nappy hair feels like a Brillo pad? Betta recognize!
Posted by Lisa at August 29, 2004 07:32 PMOkay, I'm white. And I know nothing about being Black and having nappy hair. (Although I did have dreadlocks down to my knees until last March...but that still won't get me in the club.)
So...here's my question (asked with love and respect, mind you) -- WHY isn't "natural" hair more popular amongst Black women? Maybe it's because I'm a child of the 70s, but DAMN. Y'all have some KICK-ASS hair. I know there's the good hair/bad hair thing -- and the pressing, straightening, etc. I guess what I'm really trying to say...is that there ARE people out there...people like me...who do appreciate natural beauty, no matter what colour the person happens to be.
Posted by: Carol at October 24, 2004 12:34 PMDreads eh? wow.
One of the reasons natural hair isn't popular amongst black women is because MEN make such a big deal out of it long, straight hair. Forreal...how many women do you think actually get weaved up and permed out SOLELY because they like the way it looks? More often that not it's because they know that's what men like and they're either trying to keep one pleased or catch a new one.
Then you have societal pressure, which factors in hugely. In some corporations, nappy hair is deemed "unprofessional." The corporate machine is such that in order to climb the ladder or get your foot in the door you have to conform in behavior, and sadly in appearance too.
I know it seems foolish, since it IS our NATURAL hair. We shouldn't feel compelled to hide it or make it do something it's not supposed to. But we're talking about years of societal brainwashing taken place. Maybe sometime in the distant, distant, distant future there will be more black women with natural hair than those with chemically butchered (and more black men CONTENT with this natural state). Nappy hair the norm and straight the exception...imagine that!
Good to know you're one of the people that appreciate beauty in all its forms. :)
Posted by: Lisa at October 24, 2004 12:56 PMPfft. Any man who doesn't appreciate you for YOU is a bloody farking fool and doesn't deserve your time and energy. From what I can see in your photos, you're a beautiful lady on the outside, and from what I read in your website, you're beautiful on the inside, too.
Hmpf.
